In this way, the sculptures' appearance evokes thoughts of humanity’s ability to breed and modify other species, but also of more speculative science fiction tropes where biological life is replaced by mechanical-biological hybrids. Much like Donna Haraway in The Companion Species Manifesto (2003), Baadsvig Ørmen reminds us that our relationship with animals is multifaceted: Animals are food, but also hunting companions and weapons, as well as allegories and symbols through which we understand ourselves and our values – in everything from rock carvings to animated films and fables. Are we deceiving and exploiting animals, or are we living in companionship with them—and is the latter even possible? These are the complex cultural and historical questions that emerge when small fishing flies become large. You feverishly call on Taweret, fabulating on submission and humility. Your skin feels too thin in water. You regret not introducing yourself to the deities until now. Can you submit without losing yourself? The exhibition «LOON» revolves around a glitch, an unsettling event where a body was incapable to connect with vital natural instincts. Playing with wildlife dramaturgy in other species and the whispers from an exhausted consciousness, Lene Baadsvig Ørmen further retrieves surrealistic fragments evoked in steel elements and pictorial concrete sheets. With an underlying glance towards the anthropocentric perspective, the pieces jumps in and out of flatness, moving between the irrational mind and concrete matter. The animals have a familiarity to species we have seen before, either in pictures or in reality. The technique Ørmen uses to mold the sculptures opens up for abstractions and distortions. They are not created from models in plaster or clay, but formed out of negative imprints shaped in oil sand, which are then filled with liquid bronze. She casts all of the sculptures in her own foundry and has developed a unique method emphasizing a synergetic approach to her choice of materials. In result, the casted objects can be difficult to date at first glance - they might look like objects found in the ground, remnants of a former civilization, affected by the ravages of time. The organically shaped bronze casts find their support by embracing or clinging onto closed metal pipe systems. These metal tubes are not merely a stand, but an integrated part of the sculptural object; a coupling of natural bodies with prosthetic devices. Between the mass-produced elements and the innocent, uniquely casted animals there lays a darker undertone. Do the almost cyborg-like qualities empower the animals, or do the tubes imprison them like cages? The slightly forlorn and dismal shapes evoke reminiscence of flat-squeezed wheel covers that have fallen off cars, left to be run over again and again. Or a detached hinge at the roadside, washed clean by the rain and soiled of mud repeatedly. Ørmen retrieves imaginative shapes and historically charged figures through her sculptures. This residual material gains new dignity, for up rises- I imagine- old Aztec kings, ancient sun gods and petrified sea creatures from everyday debris. The monastery was founded in 1147 and dissolved in 1532, just before the Reformation. The sound originates from the recordings of an aluminum plate, similar to those used for the sculptures. The frequencies we hear are all harmonies numerically related to the fundamental tone from this, and the three sculptures figures as resonance chambers where the materiality of each individual helps to determine both the tonal starting point and the selected frequencies which are emphasized. Loudspeakers are placed inside the sculptures and create an auditory web of vibrations invisibly connecting them. The viewer can walk between the sculptures and experience their harmonious and vibrating interactions, and discover the sonic character of each sculpture. “ «AA11XXX» hints towards a ritual experience or perhaps a new form of contemporary cosmology. The title refers to a standard code for unalloyed aluminum. The material naturally belongs to a different era than the monastery ruins, and points in the installation towards a non-linear understanding of time, where the experience of time and space can be stretched and overlap.
